Qualifying Systems

All computers used directly in RetroChallenge projects must be at least 10 years old. Obviously the older the better. Emulators may be used for the Creative and Programming challenges, but not for the Hardware or Endurance challenges (obviously).

Software & Peripherals

Anything that'll run on a qualifying system is fair game.

The Challenges

Programming Challenge

The programming challenge is pretty self-explanatory... write a program for a qualifying system and submit evidence (emulator disk image or video demo).

Creative Challenge

This one's for the artistic types. Do something cool with an old computer (music, art, whatever... be *creative*) and share the results. Documentation must be submitted in a web-friendly format (ie: mpeg, mp3, jpeg etc) or in the form of an emulator disk image.

Hardware Challenge

This is pretty wide-open... entries could include restorations, upgrades, case mods, etc. Documentation must be submitted in a web-friendly format (ie: mpeg, mp3, jpeg etc).

Endurance Challenge

Are you tough enough? In order to win this challenge you'll have to use a qualifying system (or systems) *exclusively* for the duration of the challenge. Entrants are expected to document their progress and submit regular reports via email, blogging or bbs/forum.

Timeline

RetroChallnge runs from July 1st to 31st, 2008. All entries must be completed and documentation submitted by August 5th, 2008.

Prizes!

The lucky winner of each category will receive their choice of an official RetroChallenge mouse pad or t-shirt. Winners will be determined by a top secret panel of judges whose decision is final etc, etc.

Retro Retro

Geometry For Lovers is a full-length CD of 8-bit Apple II math rock which was an entry in the 2006 RetroChallenge.
